Vincent van Gogh

Picture
Date: 29-07-1890
Vincent Van Gogh was a painter born in Zundert, The Netherlands. During his lifetime he lived and worked in many places throughout Europe. Holland, London, Paris for example. Being a passionate painter, he painted over 2100 artworks but lived in poverty because he rarely sold his paintings. Most of his money, he received from his brother Theo who supported him financially. Theo and Vincent exchanged many letters and a lot of them are well kept and that's why we know a lot of Vincent's life and his state of mind.
Throughout the years he became an alcoholic, depressed and sufferd from delusions and psychotic episodes. He even severed his own left ear with a razor and spent time in psychiatric hospitals.
Vincent Van Gogh died by suicide on 29-07-1890 after shooting himself in the chest.
Although unsuccessful and considered a madman and a failure during his lifetime, after his death he became one of the most famous and influential painters in Western art.  He is viewed as a misunderstood genius where his madness and creativity came very close to each other.
