Socrates
Date: 399 B.C.
Socrates was an important philosopher from Ancient Greece and is viewed as one of the founders of Western Philosophy.
He often roamed the streets of his birthplace Athens and tried to engage people in philosophical conversations. He wanted to convince people to have a mind of their own and not blindly follow other people. He is known for his saying: "I know I know nothing." Also known as the Socratic paradox.
Eventually he got several warnings by the authorities of Athens to halt his activities on the penalty of death, who obviously didn't agree with his way of thinking. Socrates continued his endeavors and finally was found guilty of corrupting the minds of the youth of Athens.
He got sentenced to death by drinking a poisoned drink and died in 399 B.C.
