Richard I was one of the three Europeans monarchs who led the Third Crusade. An attempt to re-capture Jerusalem from the Muslims led by his counterpart Saladin. A brilliant commander.
On the 7th of September 1191 the crusaders (12.000 men) met the army of Saladin (30.000 men) at Arsuf, Israel. A important harbor that had to be taken by the crusaders before advancing on Israel. Although the crusaders managed to defeat Saladin's army, Richard had heard about a conspiracy. His brother Prince John revolted against him and was aided by King Philip of France. Richard struck a deal with Saladin and returned home to fight John and Philip. |
