Nicolaus Copernicus
Date: 1543
Nicolaus Copernicus was (like Leonardo da Vinci) a man with many talents. This Polish/German scientist was a mathematician, governor, translator and had a doctorate in canon law. Though he is mostly known as an astronomer.
In 1543, months before he died, he released his book "On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres". A book that turned the scientific world upside down and started the so-called Copernican Revolution.
In this book he described the "Heliocentric Theory". A theory and model that placed the Sun in the center of the universe, rather than Earth and all the planets revolve around the Sun.

He (most likely) based this theory upon Ancient Greek scientists.
Nevertheless it was revolutionary, especially in a time that the Church had immense power and their strong believe placed Earth in the center of the universe. Being a doctor in canon law and working for the Church, you can imagine that the Church wasn't really happy with Copernicus after the release of his book. |
