Vercingetorix

Vercingetorix was a Gallic leader/king of the Averni who nearly defeated the Roman general/consul Julius Caesar by uniting a number of Gallic tribes and clans. For example, he won the battle of Gergovia against Julius Caesar. Vergincetorix and his Gallic army killed thousands of Roman soldiers.

But in 52 B.C. after many months being surrounded by Roman forces, Vercingetorix surrenders to Caesar at Alesia and therefore virtually all of Gaul (modern day France) surrendered. Vercingetorix was captured, brought back to Rome as a trophy. He was imprisoned and sentenced to death 6 years later.
The revolt of Vercingetorix would go down as one of the biggest revolts against Rome in history. |
