Billy the Kid (Henry McCarty was his real name) was a legendary gunslinger, thief and murderer of the American Old West. He made a living by stealing cattle, gambling and other criminal activities. He got his nickname Billy the Kid because he committed his first murder by being only 18 years old and committed another 7 murders in the following years.
Pat Garret (being a childhood friend of Billy) wanted to arrest Billy the Kid to pick up the bounty of 500 dollars. A huge amount of money at that time. Pat Garret succeeded in capturing Billy the Kid in 1880. He was tried and sentenced to death, only Billy managed to escape prison. Pat Garret didn't hesitate and chased him down. He found Billy 150 kilometers (95 miles) away at a small town called Fort Sumner. Instead of arresting him, he shot Billy the Kid. Effectively carrying out the death sentence himself. Billy was only 21 years old. |
