Edward Teach / Edward Thatch

Picture
Date: 28-11-1717
Edward Teach (or Thatch, the spelling differs), is more commonly known as Captain Blackbeard. He was a real English pirate and obviously got his nickname from his huge black beard but also his other truly fearsome looks.
Pirates were a true force in the Bahamas during the "Golden Age of Piracy". They even had a stronghold called "The Republic of Pirates"  which was in Nassau led by another infamous pirate called Captain Hornigold. Blackbeard was Hornigold's apprentice at first before he went out is own way.
During his pirating career, which was short but impressive, Teach captured over 20 ships in only two years.

Pirates really had their own flags. This one is from Queen Anne's Revenge! (Angus Konstam, Blackbeard the Pirate, 2007, page 177)
His biggest conquest was on 28-11-1717, capturing the huge French frigate called "La Concorde". This ship carried over 40 cannons! Teach immediately renamed the ship and called it: "Queen Anne's Revenge". This name might sound familiar, being a important ship in the Hollowood movies "Pirates of the Caribbean".
Teach wasn't able to enjoy his beautiful ship for long. Less than a year later, a British luitenant called Robert Maynard re-captured the ship. Teach was killed and beheaded. His body thrown into sea and his head was suspended from the bowsprit so Robert Maynard could collect his bounty for killing "Blackbeard".  Paragraph.
Did you know?
Edward Teach tied fuses in his beard and set them on fire during a battle to scare his enemies.
Location:
The Republic of Pirates was in Nassau, Bahama's.
