Napoleon Bonaparte
Date: 09-11-1799
Napoleon Bonaparte was a French general, consul and even Emperor of France.
Napoleon was born on the island of Corsica and joined the army at a very young age. Slowly but surely he worked himself up through the ranks.
When in 1789 the French Revolution started he joined the revolution and made himself populair throughout the nation by successfully stopping a charge of royalists in the middle of Paris by using 40 canons. In 1795 he was promoted to general and became increasingly populair.
On November 9th, 1799 managed to lead a coup and made himself First Consul of France (effectively a dictator of France), and many see this as the end of the French Revolution. Only five years later he even crowned himself Emperor of France.
In the meantime Napoleon conquered a large part of Europe, creating a large empire.

He tried to conquer Russia as well. Leading a huge army of over 680.000 men he entered Russia but got defeated, not only did he lose many battles, but also the cold (the French weren't dressed to the extreme Russian weather conditions) caused many casualties. After his unsuccessful campaign in Russia, Napoleon returned with only 40.000 men.
This eventually led to the banishment of Napoleon to the island of Elba. Only to return less than a year later for another 100 days. How that story ends? Read Arthur Wellesley's page! |
