Spartacus
Date: 71 B.C.
Spartacus was a slave who was sold as a gladiator. Some say that before this time, he served in the Roman army. Spartacus became a gladiator at a "ludi" (gladiator school) in Capua, Italy. This ludi was run by the cruel "lanista" (owner of the ludi) named Lentulus Batiatus.
Around 73 B.C. Spartacus managed to escape along with a number of other gladiators and started to build an army out of former gladiators and slaves. He even managed to defeat a number of number of Roman legions!
In 71 B.C. Spartacus and his army wanted to escape to Sicily but got chased down and defeated by the Roman general Marcus Licinius Crassus and his 8 (!) legions.
More than 6000 slaves from the army Spartacus were captured and crucified along the Via Appia (a road leading to Rome) as an example to never rise up against the Roman Republic.
Spartacus himself or his body was never found after the battle.
