Date: 21-07-1969
If you have read the page of Yuri Gagarin, you might know that in the 60's the United States were losing the "space race". For this reason John F. Kennedy announced in 1961, that the United States would try to do everything in their power to place a man on the moon within ten years. The American space organization, NASA, started the Apollo Program. The main goal of this program was to bring mankind to the moon. After several test missions, Neil Armstrong (a naval aviator, test pilot, engineer and professor), Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins were selected to go to the moon. This mission was called Apollo 11. On July 16th 1969, the astranouts were launched by a Saturn V rocket from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida. After a four day journey, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon. Michael Collins remained in the command module orbiting the moon. |
After a few hours of rest, Neil and Buzz prepared to leave the spacecraft Neil Armstrong was the first to step of the lunar module and on July 21st 1969, 02:56 set foot on the moon and spoke the legendary words: "It's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."
Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin explored the surface of the moon for more than 2.5 hours, did research, made photos and videos before returning to the command module and to Earth. On July 24th all three of them landed safely in the Pacific Ocean. |
