Henry VIII was King of England between 1509 and 1547. He is famous or notoriously known for two things: his many wives and the separation of the Church of England from the Vatican.
During his first marriage with Catherine of Aragon (they had one child, the later Queen Mary), Henry fell deeply in love with a woman called Anne Boleyn.
Therefore he wanted to have his marriage with Catherine annulled. For this he needed permission of the Pope who didn't agree with his request.
Simply said, because of this Henry separated the Church of England from the Vatican, named himself Supreme Head of the Church, divorced Catherine and married Anne in 1533. This separation of the Vatican is now known as the English Reformation and effectively transformed England from a a Catholic country to a Protestant one. After only three years of marriage with Anne Boleyn, Henry again fell in love with another women called Jane Seymour and wanted to marry her. So, Henry accused Anne of treason, incest and adultery. She was locked up in the Tower of London, tried and found guilty. On May 19th 1536 she was beheaded with a sword. Henry married Jane and after only a year, she died after giving birth to a son. Henry would marry three more times. |
