Stephen Hawking

Stephen Hawking can easily be named in one breath with scientists like Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein. Hawking was a brilliant physicist, mathematician, cosmologist and authors and is considered to be one of the most influential scientists of all-time. He did a lot of significant discoveries throughout his career that changed the way we look at the universe forever.
During his time as a student at the University of Oxford, Hawking experienced increasing clumsiness and problems with his motor functions. In 1963 he was diagnosed with ALS. A fatal disease that affects the motor neurones in the brain and spinal cord. The doctors gave him a life expectancy of only two years. Hawking refused to give up but slowly lost the ability to walk, speak or move at all until his entire body was paralyzed.
Because of the loss of his ability to speak, Hawking got a revolutionary speech computer attached to his automated wheelchair, which allowed him to speak through the computer by selecting words and phrases.
