Arthur Wellesley was the first Duke of Wellington. Therefore he is more commonly known as "The Duke of Wellington". He was a very capable general who served the British Army on campaigns in Spain and India but gained world fame as being the most important general during the "The Battle of Waterloo".

In February 1815 Napoleon escaped Elba, returned to France, gained new support and crowned himself once again as Emperor of France.
The English, Prussians and Dutch combined their armies and prepared for war, trying to stop Napoleon and his attempt to regain power all over Europe. On June 6th 1815, Napoleon met these forces at Waterloo and a fierce battle started. Arthur Wellesley took command over the English, Prussians and Dutch and after a long battle defeated the French Army. This was effectively the true end of Napoleon's reign.
Napoleon fled to Paris but was banished again. This time to Saint Helena, a tiny island 2000 kilometers (or 1250 miles) off the coast of Africa where he died 6 years later.
