Boudica
Date: 60/61
Boudica was a Celtic (now Britain) of the Iceni tribe. Boudica's husband Prasutagus was king of the Iceni and had an allegiance with Rome. After his death he split his kingdom between Boudica and Rome. This was illegal according to the Romans and annexed the entire kingdom of the Iceni. They publicly flogged Boudica and her two daughters were raped.
This infuriated Boudica and she led the Iceni, Trinovantes and an number of other tribes in an enormous uprising against Rome. Her army was said to have 100.000 soldiers. During the revolt they tortured killed between 70.000 and 80.000 Roman and British citizens. She even set Londinium on fire after the governor Suetonius and his soldiers left, scared of Boudica and her army.
Suetonius gathered his legions and met Boudica's army, probably somewhere in the English Midlands. Suetonius was extremely outnumbered against the huge Celtic army.
But the Roman Legions were a warmachine. They were well organized, trained and had a lot of technological advances. Although outnumbered, they had an big tactical advantage and they managed to defeat Boudica despite having only 10.000 soldiers.
Historians think she died of her wounds or committed suicide to escape Roman capture.
