Charlemagne
Date: 25-12-800
On Christmas Day in the year 800 Charlemagne was crowned emperor by Pope Leo III. That made him the first emperor of Europe since the fall of the Roman Empire over 300 years before.
Before his coronation as emperor Charlemagne (or Charles the Great) was king of the Franks. His kingdom was pretty big already at that time. It stretches from the south of France, large parts of Germany, Austria, Belgium and The Netherlands.
Later he annexed parts of Italy, northern Germany and Switzerland.
