On July 6th, 1942 the entire Frank family would go into hiding in a secret annex behind a bookcase: "The Achterhuis". This was the place where Anne and her family were forced to hide from the Nazi's who hunted the Jews. The family would spent almost two years there but were betrayed on the 4th of August 1944.
Anne first gets deported to the Westerbork transit camp and from there she's sent to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. There she dies in February 1945, probably caused by a typhus epidemic which spread through the camp, killing over 17,000 other prisoners. Anne was only 15 years old. Anne's diary gives a unique and sad view of the life of a Jewish teenager during World War II. Her diary "Het Achterhuis" or as translated in English: "The Diary of a Young Girl" has been published and released by the only survivor of the Frank family, Otto Frank, her father. Today it has been translated into over 70 languages and is one of the most read books in the world. Through her diary, Anne lives forever. |

Anne Frank's biggest dream was to become a successful writer. The diary was a gift for her 13th birthday, this was on Friday 12 June 1942, less than a month before she went into hiding. She chose it herself, an autograph book bound with white and red checked cloth, and closed with a small lock.
